Self Adhesive Labels for Security Sealing Jars and Bottles
There is an ingenious way to label these products using standard in stock self-adhesive labels which can be printed on laser printers.
Manufactures of food products that are sold in jars or bottles often want to make sure that the contents have not been tampered with by using a self-adhesive security seal. The product can not be opened without breaking the seal.
High volume manufacturers use what are called “watchstrap labels” which as the name implies are shaped like a watch and strap, the watch bit sticks onto the top and the straps go down the sides and are over labelled by a separate side label. Sometimes the top label and the side label are joined by a thin adhesive strip this shape resembles a dumbbell, hence the name “dumbbell labels”.
This kind of self-adhesive label can be very expensive when made as a special, or bought in medium or low quantities (Below 100,000 labels). Jars and bottles vary in size and shape so it is unlikely that smaller manufacturers can buy what they want from stock.
There is however a solution, smaller and newer food manufacturers can buy the self adhesive label components of the security seal and apply them at final packing. So round labels for the lid plus thin strip labels for the seal plus side labels are purchased and pre printed on a laser printer. At final packing the thin strip label is stuck with one end on the lid and the other down the side of the product, the lid label and the sided labels are stuck over the ends of the strip label.
Simple permanent adhesive paper labels can be used, or if the product needs to be more decorative, or waterproof then gloss labels or plastic labels. We would not recommend inkjet printing for retail products because the ink is water based and can smudge or come off onto customers’ hands and clothes.
